The Swiss subsidise the poor, old, and handicapped.

We could do that, too, and do it directly. We could just expand Medicaid to include those who can't afford health insurance and be done with it. We don't have to come up with some new scheme of mandatory insurance if we're just going to pay through taxes for those who aren't equipped to buy it. KISS.
