august-

here's a pm i sent to sioux earlier today
explaining the pics-in-profiles situation.

if this doesn't clear it up for you read it
to mall rat and she'll explain.

i don't get sunday off?

the problem is just semantics. the pic IS a jpeg.

your photo web program (pbase) has named it:

jiki.pbase.com

there's an extra period in the file name between the
number 42758831 and the word SiouxNation.

that confuses SI's computer... making it think it's
a .SiouxNation.jpg file instead of a .jpg file.

i would venture to guess that you can't link any of
your pbase photos into your profile for that very reason
and it's probably an intentional move by pbase to
protect their bandwidth and not let people use their
servers for hosting pics to outside sites.

if you rename the pic and re-upload it to pbase i'll
bet you'll get another period added in the file name
by pbase.

to actually display pics in your profile you'll have
to save the picture somewhere else. if you don't have
any webspace you should get some... it's cheap.

whenever a pic is loaded in someone's browser (like
when they view your profile) it has to be served up
by the host computer that it resides on. that uses bandwidth.
pbase lets you use that bandwidth when you put in a direct
link because it takes traffic to their site but they don't
want to be bandwidth hosts for other applications or
organizations like SI when they get no benefit from it.

when you have your own web space you pay for the bandwidth
and you can use it however you see fit. if you get excessive
hits on your pics and exceed your bandwidth limit then
your web host will want you to pay more.

i put wharfrat's pic on rose's webspace. that's why it
worked. i also renamed it of course, so it didn't have
any extra periods in the filename and it ended with .jpg
BUT i did not change the format of the pic, i only changed
the semantics of the filename and i put it on rose's site
as the host. she has paid for plenty of bandwidth that she
can use as she pleases and wharfy's pic is insignificant.

as insignificant as the bandwidth is for one pic you can
see why pbase restricts direct links to their photos because
if all of thier customers did that and some of the pics
became heavily popular and got millions of hits then they'd
be severley hurt by it.

the other photos in your profile are linked to other servers
and you're actually using their bandwidth for free every time
someone goes to your profile page. someday in the future you're
likely to see those little red X's show up where your
pictures are now. <g>
