Three African immigrants were critically hurt Friday in a fire at their run-down building in northern Paris, firefighters said, just two weeks after a deadly blaze at a hotel in the heart of the French capital. A 45-year-old woman and her two daughters aged three and eight were all revived at the scene after going into respiratory failure. They were later hospitalized. Investigators did not immediately know what had sparked the blaze, which also left six people slightly injured. According to a building resident, seven needy families who were waiting to be transferred to better public housing lived in the shabby apartment block. City officials said the building once belonged to the city but had been taken over by squatters several years ago. "It's a squat in the administrative sense of the word, as residents do not have leases, but the city of Paris recognizes these people are in need of better housing," said city council member Catherine Jegout. On April 15, an accidental blaze at a Paris hotel mainly used as temporary public housing for needy families claimed the lives of 24 people, including 11 children. It was the deadliest fire in the French capital in 32 years.
