Business week article Aug 12/96

Interesting article:

Pros: Iomega trying to persuate PC makers to design drives into every one of machines, ssales will triple this quarter, goal to bring down to $99 per unit.

Cons: Not backward compatible, PC Makers install them if customer wants them. Standard floppy drive costs $20, Corporate customers hesitant to install them for fear of workers walking off with large data files.

Backward compatibility is very important. Who want to spend $15 for a zip diskette when you can get a 1.44 floppy for pennies? If Zip was able to read the 3.5" floppy then it would definitely become the new standard. Where are the rumours of backward compatibility for the zip?

If I were the consumer, I would wait for a year until the battlefield clears.
