- Thousands of toads mysteriously puffed up until they exploded in a Hamburg pond this week. Pundits immediately blamed chemical pollution, but no chemicals were detected in either the pond or the deceased amphibians. The latest theory is that crows attacked the toads and plucked out their livers. To ward off the crows, the toads swelled up. But when they were punctured they exploded. It's still only a theory.
