That raised the death toll from the latest wave of insurgent attacks that began on Friday to at least 74. The violence was timed to deflate hopes in Washington and Baghdad that the installation of the Iraq’s first democratically elected government would curb the uprising.


I think the reality is that the insurgency has continued to increase all along. The only difference around the January elections was that it was really really cold in Iraq and the insurgents didn't want to get up at 4:00am and plant bombs every day, so there appeared to be a slack in activity. The same thing happened last year and it was followed by a major rise in activity in the spring.
