”Rightwing extremists may be more dangerous to us than Al Qaida.”

There is some truth to that statement. An extremist in your own house is usually labeled a domestic abuser. An extremist within your community usually is known as a trouble-maker or even as a criminal. An extremist within your own political sphere or an opposing one is a corrupter of the principles on which you stand.

An extremist may be known by their willingness to going to great or exaggerated lengths to advance their notions or purposes.

Many people who are extreme are harmless or even beneficial to society, like Edison. Extremists are dangerous only when they are willing to sacrifice principle for the sake of gains in power and control structures in their relations with others, usually impacting the autonomy of those involved in a negative way; often such people are exposed by their character flaws. If our society were healthier we would not tolerate such types to navigate within any of our political spheres. Currently the finger pointing is somewhat ironic.

Al-Quaida is dangerous for reasons beyond this. It is a broad based international organization, not one extremist or even group of extremists, that is dangerous because by it’s design it is intended to destroy us and our way of life. The comparison between this organization to individual heinous criminals requires a stretch.

I agree that extremist rhetoric is very dangerous because it typically requires the audience to agree to participate in something qualified by a values conflict from the on-set. If that can be accomplished the participants would have a very difficult time turning back.
