If you were working for PETA, it would be because you were really in to the idea of what they do. I imagine Greenpeace workers aren't sucking up the big bucks either. The idealists who work for those organizations probably want to see most of the money spent on the mission- I can't know for sure, but it sure seems that way.

The people I knew who went in to public interest law didn't expect much money (and didn't get much), but they went in to the field because they were huge idealists, and they wanted to change the world. Part of the "pay" they received (I assume) was doing a job they could feel "religious" about. Missionaries don't get paid much either (or so I have been told), but it doesn't make me "sick" that they don't get money (or are "exploited" by the church)- they are storing up treasure in heaven, as they see it- and people who work for other charities are doing similar work for similar remuneration (I would guess, barring evidence to the contrary).

IMO
not that I am "sure"
etc etc etc
