If GM had been a good buy the vulture guys would have bid and dismembered it a long time ago. The firm has been losing market share for the last 40 years. Driving to the local Barnes and Noble this afternoon I listened to that blowhard Limbaugh ranting about how GM has become a 'welfare state'. He said health care costs were crippling the firm. Yeah, that's partially true, but what about the crappy, poorly styled and built products that they have been putting out forever? How about the fact that they make most of their margin on larger trucks and SUV's? At a 15B market cap investors are essentially writing off the company for now. Only way I could see the stock do a nice trading pop is if the government got more interested in health care...Message formatting hints

Until the 1970s the American automakers had limited foreign competition and became sloppy. They could afford to give in to the labor unions and pass the extra labor cost on to buyers, eventually making themselves somewhat uncompetitive. They haven't fully recovered from all that. Presently GM seems to be the worst of the lot. I think it will be very difficult for GM to compete with the Asian automakers. However, given GM's exceedingly low PSR I'll keep an eye it from time to time just in case they surprise me.

Like GM, but to a much less degree, I think SUNW also got sloppy and unfocused, no doubt corrupted by good times during the "bubble" days. I think there's a fair chance it will eventually get its act together. The opteron based servers and such should help a bit.

Best,
Mark
