I would guess one reason for Bob to start talking about specific funds was all the big new markets Moneytalk got on like New York etc. and for new listeners hearing the show for the first time to keep hearing about "the group in Valley Forge" or questions about "the family named after the British General" would be annoying and distracting if they were clueless of what fund or family was being talked about. I think the show is much improved now and as a subscriber I think value has only been added, not subtracted.
