I would have used the Israelis. The Israelis were uniquely adept at such things at that point in time. Entebbe, for example. Besides, it was their people at risk.

Slightly edited.

What Israelis? Entebbe went down 4 years later.

This action was going down now. We had heavily armed killers with hostages making an escape...taking the hostages with them. Once they left the Olympic Village, there was no waiting period. Somebody had to make a decision on when to attack... not whether to attack.

There was no reason to believe the Israelis would do better and the Germans knew they had top quality support readily available and on scene anytime they wanted it.

No Israeli Special Forces were on the scene at Fuersty, nor do I believe were any in Munich. And it was not just Israelis at risk. the German pilots had been placed at risk by the terrorists too. The latter after the terrorists had specifically agreed not to do that during negotiations.

The version you quoted is not correct. I'll point out a coupla errors.
The reporter is uninformed. The battlefield was illuminated. 1972 model (and earlier) Night vision scopes were wonderful in the dark. They were useless in light. The firing of one bullet or the light from one vehicle was enough to make them useless. In the first case for moments, in the second as long as the light was on.
The German snipers were trained.
They did not have inferior weapons. Hell they were shooting a relatively short distance across an open tarmac at a lit target. Any decent shooter could have hit the target with any rifle.

The Germans have a top-notch Special Forces. My recollection is the shooters were from the Bundesgrenzschutz Polizei. It has always been highly regarded as one of the best and best trained paramilitary police forces in the world. I can vouch for that, as I worked and trained with them in the mid 60s and on that tour in the early 70s.

PS. I don't have my info from press reports. I was an A Team Commander based in Germany from Jan 70 to Dec 72, have been to Fuersty many times including that week. That doesn't mean I'm perfect. I have a great memory but sometimes it doesn't last long. In this case I trust my memory over your reporter.
