In this case I trust my memory over your reporter.

I'm going on my memory as well. My memory is that there was a lot of diplomatic and bureaucratic jockeying for position going on after the hostages were taken and a lot of international pride and face saving taking precedence over the safety of the hostages. I remember very clearly the Israelis offering to mount a rescue and being rebuffed. I was not relying on any reporter when I made my original comments, only my memory and my memory is that the Germans were utterly unprepared for this, as might be expected given that this stuff wasn't yet routine.

The action was going down now...Once they left the Olympic Village, there was no waiting period. Somebody had to make a decision on when to attack... not whether to attack.

You're talking about the details of the final action. I had forgotten whatever I knew about that action itself. I didn't even remember that it took place outside the Olympic Village until I looked it up to respond to your post. My memory defers to your memory on the particulars of that event, although if you research it you will find a lot out there consistent with the assertions of "my reporter" that the German police were ill equipped for the task.

My focus was the earlier stages of the process, the assertion posted that the proposal for Spielberg's movie implied a focus on understanding and accommodation of the poor, mistreated Palestinians with endless negotiations rather than staging a rescue operation. That inference seems silly to me. It seems like the writer is looking at an historical event through today's prism, a biased one. Perhaps the writer is too young to remember that the post-911 paradigm didn't always exist. The Israelis said right off that they would not give in to the demands of the terrorists and the terrorists said right off that they did not want money or anything else the Germans could offer so accommodation was simply not on the table, not feasible, not a option.
