Siebel climbs, again, on takeover speculation
By Michael Paige

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Siebel Systems Inc.'s stock climbed sharply higher Tuesday on continued speculation that the troubled business software maker could soon be acquired. In recent trading, the shares traded higher by 81 cents, or 9%, at $9.72 on heavy volume. The stock, which was the Nasdaq's most-active issue, earlier gained by more than 12% to touch a high of $10 -- a level not seen since early January. Analysts pointed to speculation ranging from continued hopes that Oracle Corp. could scoop up the company, to fresh rumors that billionaire investor Carl Icahn might be interested in Siebel. The company, facing shareholder pressure to turnaround its financial performance and boost its share price, is set to met with the financial community on Thursday in New York.
