Equality of wages on a world basis implies equality of costs. And that means you no longer get dirt cheap imports, which inevitably drives US costs up. Which lowers your standard of living on a relative basis at least and maybe for real since they can now get some of what you previously did. And their exports become more competitive with yours, puttung your balance of payments- -all of it- -in jeopardy.

Absolutely.
But what worries me is the fact that we are now importing more food than exporting. Not about the balance of payments etc, but the fact that it may mean our overall ag production is peaking or even dropping. Yeah, we still have plenty of surplus, so we will still be able to feed ourselves, but it worries me that these trends may persist, and that we will be only marginally able to feed ourselves. Not today, not next year, but maybe 10-20 years from now.

Simple way of summing up part of your statement is that 1 Bil Chinese want to live like us. Resources won't allow it, so we are competing for the same pie; our share will diminish, and our standard of living will drop.

Old stuff, but remember hemp? I was at a post-carbon talk last night and mentioned hemp. The Willits folks thought it was great; my homies want to kill me. "It will seed our smoke." Told ya growers wouldn't think much of it. "Oh, flax is good".
