Excerpts from the press release:

>Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) today announced it has signed a lease on a state-of-the-art second distribution center in New Castle, Delaware. Amazon.com also announced plans to expand its Seattle distribution center by 70%.

>To reach this goal, the company plans to stock both distribution centers by purchasing directly from publishers supplemented, in the future, by a nationwide network of local drop-shipping in cooperation with major suppliers.

Earlier on this thread (see messages 25 to 39) I explained why Amazon had to do this to stay competitive, specially on the face of B&N competition. The discussion developed then into an interesting exchange about what is and isn't JIT.

It bodes well for Amazon that management has now acted on that.

I also suggested in house printing. That is, download the camera ready book from the publisher after each sale and print and bound a single volume in house using the latest in printing technology (it can be done, trust me, I used to work in computer publishing and typography). This would be indeed JIT warehousing.
