It is hard to draw meaningful conclusions on the group of people who will buy lotto tickets or go to Las Vegas rather than save.

Allow me to introduce you to your fellow American citizen. <g> The population here on SI are the exception, not the norm. Why does Vegas make billions, why are lotto sales so huge, who IS reading People magazine anyway? These are questions answered by looking at the average person in America, IMHO.

My wife is a psychologist, ever meet someone with the "average" IQ of 100? OIY, for being the mean, that's not a very bright person. Not very bright people believe what is told to them, will take all the credit that is offered to them, will accept car payments that are lower but not understand that the term of the loan is 60 months instead of 36, and will barely be able to see a few months out, let alone years, which is required for successful retirement investing. Like it or not, these people are half the population and will have a large impact on the economy when they do "hit the wall" spending-wise.
