Barry Goldwater was very much against these fundamentalists and thought they were total BS artists. But Reagan, even though he was never much of a church-goer, decided to throw in with the evangelicals. Reagan started their rise to power. GW Bush took it two steps further and enlisted them as his nerdy storm troopers.
