I was asked via PM if I think enlistments will improve when we pull out of Iraq. Decided to post my response on the board.

No, I don't think enlistments will improve when we pull out of Iraq. Besides, I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.
We defeated Germany and Japan 60 years ago and still have 50,000 troops in Germany and (I believe) 15,000+ in Japan. We fought in Korea 55 years ago and still have 35,000 troops there.

I think our enlistment problem is a monstrous attitude problem.
MSM and the left (and many on the right) expect everything to be free in America including freedom.

American youth are getting fatter and more out of shape everyday. It is difficult to find a kid who wants a physical challenge. The biggest physical challenges much of today's youth wants to experience are body piercings and blow jobs.

We let kids trade in baseball, football, long bike rides, and primitive summer camps for Nintendo and Microsoft games and computer summer camps. Court ordered buses have replaced walking to school. 16 year old HS kids drive themselves everywhere. Walking a few blocks to play with a friend at a local park has been replaced with instant messaging. Public water fountains have been replaced with sugar-filled Starbucks drinks. A peanut butter sandwich in a jacket pocket has been replaced with whoppers, fries and milk shakes...and super-size it please. Kids on bikes are no longer allowed to deliver newspapers. The big challenging play areas in apartment complexes and city parks are gone thanks to lawsuits.

We have serious problems. Even more serious than enlistment shortfalls. I think the unwillingness to serve is one symptom of a much greater attitudinal problem that must be corrected at the individual level if America is to survive.

I read some of Clinton's recent comments on obesity in the young. I believe Clinton is part of the youth problem and he got no respect for making the comments, but I was glad to finally see a president admit and address the problem. JFK did the same in 62 and 63 when he established the 25 mile walk program and got everyone going. Americans need a JFK style swift kick in the pants or as I would prefer to say...a boot in the ass, and they need it today.
