Want to drop this and go back to discussing old sniper rifles? I believe that was your area of combat expertise last month.

Sniper rifles? Your memory must have me mixed up with someone else.

Recon teams are not rescue specialists.

That sounds reasonable to me. I accept everything you've offered regarding the arcana of military organization, in general, and also re the formation of specialized units in Israel. You don't need to keep lecturing me on that. You're obviously very tight with the detail and I acknowledge your expertise on the subject. If you were trying to show it off, you were very successful.

But you've turned your expertise into one big red herring about whether the Israelis did or didn't have specialized units in 1972. You keep trying to make this about whether they had formed those specialized teams. Maybe that was an intentional diversion. Or maybe you're just too close to it to see the big picture.

Here on the outside, where I sit, the question is not whether Israel had yet formed specialized teams designed for hostage rescue but simply whether they had a recognized capacity for hostage rescue, as I asserted. For those of us on the outside, not encumbered with your detailed knowledge, that's pretty easy to assess.

Surely you can forgive someone with my lack of exposure to those arcana for concluding that Israel having just conducted a high profile hostage rescue is evidence of their being recognized as having the capacity for hostage rescue. And surely you can forgive the commentators of the time for having concluded and reported the same. And surely you can forgive us for having the impression that the Israelis, since they offered the Germans resources, actually had suitable resources to offer, regardless of what they were called and how they were organized. And surely you can forgive us for not caring whether or not the Israelis had organized that capacity into specialized hostage rescue teams.
