It also shoots holes in your argument that this is a busy stretch of road so the US troops manning the checkpoints couldn't keep track of the traffic...

I never said it was so busy that it was impossible to keep track of traffic, but there is traffic, at least on some sections, and at least limited traffic across the whole route. There is no easy way to know which car is carrying which person until you stop the car.
