If you do a web search, you will find lots of articles specifically about Perdue and the abuse of chickens there. This is not an isolated incident. You said you especially liked to eat Perdue chickens because they were plump and juicy, or something like that. Aside from the fact that they are plump and juicy because they are shot full of growth hormones and antibiotics, they are treated particularly badly.
I think one of the reasons the animal rights movement is growing so rapidly now is that we know from recent research that chickens are very intelligent, will fight to the death to defend their chicks, recognize individuals and form relationships with them, and solve complex problems. Some scientists think from their studies that they are as smart and complex as dogs, who we do not eat in this country. So I think it is important to follow chicken abuse stories.
First things first. While vegans are careful not to kill ants, cockroaches and mice unless it's totally unavoidable, that is kind of a fringe issue for most people. I think the word on chickens is getting out, and I am happy to help. I was surprised yesterday when a coworker announced that he and his extended family would no longer eat KFC chicken, and were going to only buy organic, free range chicken in the future. His family is not at all interested in vegetarianism or things like that, and I never talked to him about this issue, and yet word is getting out. I was very happy to see that. |
