There are numerous laws that can be into play to protect the American position. It helps that we are one of the largest and most affluent markets in the world.

So just do what we want and screw the rest of the world if they don't like it. It sounds like what you are blaming Bush for doing.


No. I never said that......what does Bush have to do with offshore, tax havens?

When you say formerly, I am assuming you're talking about one that has moved to the Bahamas or Bermuda. To answer your question, I offer you the inverse....why shouldn't they if they are an American company that has moved offshore to escape taxes?

Because now they are foreign companies.


Why do you defend them? They are not your friend.

If we tax foreign companies we are putting up a trade barrier. If we only tax companies that were formerly American than we are still putting up a trade barrier even if it is limited and more selective. To the extent that it has any practical effect it will largely be to shift business from formerly American companies to companies that have never been American.

I want to tax companies that were American and moved only because they wanted to stop paying taxes.
