Actually, Ken, the 30 year bond is a good idea... that they should have re-instituted at least a year ago.

Interest rates are quite likely to be higher in the future (as we are near historic lows now) so the more current debt we can lock down at favorable long-term rates, the better.

It keeps costs down... just like a homeowner getting a 15 or 30 year *fixed rate* mortgage instead of an ARM.

Also, the bond markets themselves have be calling for the reintroduction of a longer bond (for a variety of technical reasons, including maintaining orderly markets).

Several foreign countries (Britain, France, Germany, etc.) have introduced even *longer term* bonds in recent years --- they have rolled-out 50 year bonds... some public corporations too.
