Dear Dr Jaeger > Just a scientific footnote that'll help you sort it out between the Schiavo PVS case and the Herbert (severe) PTSD case

Thank you for referring Mr Herbert to me and also for your opinion.

In my opinion, the diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not correct even though Herbert recovered partially two months after the building fell on him.

PTSD is a psychological problem which prevents coping in daily life. There is no blindness or interference with consciousness although various hysterical or quasi-hysterical manifestations can be present. This may make diagnosis difficult. Herbert did not have a psychological but a functional disorder arising from physical damage to his brain, particularly the left side which is the dominant hemisphere and which also controls speech. In time, like anyone else and especially someone who has had his experience, he may well develop psychological problems but those were not the cause of his persistent disability for nearly ten years.

Kind regards
