Why is alcohol legal when marijuana isn't, for instance? Excellent question! Part of the insanity of modern America. Marijuana is probably the least dangerous of all intoxicating substances out there, but the government declares war on it?!? The political climate just wasn't right for the Democrats to change the Marijuana when they were in power in the 1960s and 1970s. It seems to be slowly changing though, with states legalizing medical Marijuana. Even some conservative Republicans have concluded that Marijuana prohibition is utterly insane and are advocating a change. I think the climate will have changed enough by perhaps 2010 to start seeing Marijuana legaization or decriminalization at the very least.
