Say you are in a squad car. Say you in a squad car in a lightening storm in Toulumne Meadows. Say you are parked and you aren't touching an metal. Say your vehicle gets struck by lightening damaging electronic equipment but you are insulated from the electrical charge. Would we say that this man was "struck by lightening"? Most would. Being "struck by lighening has many different meanings and interpretations.

Another example.... A few years ago, I was camping on the fringes of a glacier on Mt. Baker in Washington. On the way up, our guide pointed to a gnarly old tree on a ridge at the timberline. He noted a lightening strike that had occurred a couple months earlier. The tree was struck by lightening, and the fellow who happened to be sleeping under that tree happens to be dead. But he wasn't struck by lightning. He was struck by a ground effect. Just as dead, but how do we categorize the incident?

I cannot speak for the ranger, but my friend who related the story of his Park associate's record was a Class V whitewater kayaker. He certainly understood the Darwin Award concept.
