Socialism is not a viable form of government no matter how many times it is tried. State control of the economy and the welfare of the citizens more often than not results in crushing inefficiencies. I'd much rather err on the side of free market capitalism, because at least people are free to compete, succeed on their own, or even unionize if they can't.

To my knowledge, socialism in its purest form has never been done in the world. The closest probably is China. And its certainly viable. However, its not a democracy. Some of the most successful democracies with strong socialistic overtones are the Scandinavian countries. Of course, they are also capitalistic. Essentially, socialism is the development of the welfare state where the state insures that all its population is cared for. If done right, it can be a very positive form of gov't.
