To All:

The latest Information Week (August 5, 1996) has some disturbing news for the GIFTed. Online sales are not taking off yet as earlier anticipated. There is some info under "Unfulfilled Promise on page 48:

"Selling software should have been the product par excellence for the Web, yet the results have been mixed," sasys Torrey Byles, a director of electronic commerce at market researcher Giga Information Group in Cambridge , Mass. "Money changing hands for products is not really happening on the Web."

Reasons cited for the slow takoff in Internet Sales were

* public perception of unsafe credit card transactions
* Late entries of popular retailers
* poor execution by Web site providers (lost orders, ...)
* poor execution by retailers (warehousing, distribution, service)

The main theme of the article is that Advertising/Branding is what is really taking off now.

I expect that after retailers learn their lessons from mail order catalogs Internet sales should take off. I wonder how long this will take?
