Re: The piece on Brooklyn’s Paul Robeson High School for Business and Technology written by Jamal E. Watson:

<< But Robeson still has a long way to go. Only 60 percent of the students here graduate and go off to college.>>

Oh? How many do graduate? And how many do "go off to college"? Surely that number is not the same. Surely there are many who do graduate but do not go off to college.

And in the very next sentence:

<< A large portion of the students are performing below average, forcing Weston to initiate 15 partnerships with outside institutions....>>

Now that is interesting. He uses an exact percentage for those who "graduate and go off to college", but only a "large number" who perform below average? Why? Why a percentage in one case and a descriptive phrase in the other? And shades of Garrison Keillor's home town. Many students perform below average!! Perhaps Watson expects them all to perform above average? Not to mention that average is not defined. Average for that school? District wide? State wide? National?

When I read sloppy writing like this, the rest is just skipped. The author's credibility simply disappears. And I can't help but wonder how many thousands of readers have their opinions influenced and molded by this stuff.

Edit: I decided to go back and read the rest of the piece anyway. And I do agree with much of the author's apparent viewpoints.
