Imo it's better because you don't face the prospect of debt (if you are prudent) but other than that I don't think it's that big a thing.

Spending time with the people you care about is what's important, and just as many affluent people are starved in that respect as poor people.

I've taken to buying my clothes at thrift shops and the quality of my wardrobe has actually improved.
