I really have no idea what the US relationship is with Russia, and what our goals are.

But I'm usually willing to engage in uniformed speculation ;-)

Much of the public discussion centers around Putin, Yukos, and 'war of terror'.

**********

The 'better off with democracies as neighbors' is that a code phrase for (nominally) Christian instead of Islamic states ?

Is the US and EU blocking Russian activity to their West to push them to concentrate on the South (Islamic states) and East (towards China).

************

The stakes are much higher for the EU than for the US - the EU needs as much buffer between themselves and Russia as possible.
Russian bases in the Baltic states would be a threat to the EUs norhtern flank. And Belarus is a giant forward Russian base.

While the Ukraine and to some degree Moldova are strategic to the US also , since the Ukraine can constrain Russia's access to the Black Sea, I don't see the Baltics as critical for the US, nor is Belarus.

So the US maybe doing the EUs job for it, and taking the heat from Russia, in return for ......?

*************

On another level, this helps set a conflict between the EU and Russia. I don't think we need Strafor to tell us that a key element of US policy is to keep the EU and Russia against each other.
