I don't think this statement is quite correct. While the core was weight bearing, so too were the external "curtain" walls. The structural key was in keeping both structural elements perpendicular, and this was done by connecting the outer walls and the central columns by the floor joists. The loss of any of these elements would compromise the integrity of the whole.
