My concern now is, how important is Image Stabilization?

Not a must have at short lens lengths, but amazingly useful with long ones -- over 100mm, 35mm equivalent. I work with a 70-200 IS Canon lens that makes possible sharp hand held photos in light levels at least four times as dim as without IS.
