I don't know what the answer is- but I know that the society I want to live in starts with a common denominator, and the only one I see is the public schools. I agree with you that we can't have bad teachers, and that we need to focus on critical skills- but NCLB has defined critical skills in a stupid way, and art and music are being cut out, when those classes often help kids learn better (learning music and math are related), AND those classes help kids love school- and a big part of getting children to do well in school is a result of a good attitude about being at school.
