Democratic socialism seems to work pretty well. We have a lot of socialist programs in the US, and many of them are a success- head start, social security, medicare, food stamps (to name just a few)- granted, we need to actually tax people enough to pay for the programs, but I think most common people want them, because they can see themselves needing them some day.
