My wife was a food stamp examiner for a while. Some of her clients with seasonal jobs made more in six months than the two of us put together did working all year. They knew how to work the system by claiming that their monthly income had dropped to zero, and that's what I object to.

One time I had to get into savings to buy hamburger. The person in front of me had two carts. One with steaks that she bought with food stamps and one with beer that she bought with change left over from the food stamps.

My main objection to socialist programs is that they allow people to shift responsibility for the consequences their decisions to somebody else. Nobody should have to starve, but some people get very adept at playing the game.
