Vincent,

One advantage that GE has over ATM is that to some extent ATM is teleco based and there are lease rates for wider application of the technology. I recently read an article on the UCLA radiology system that is based on 3 Newbridge ATM switches. The switches cost $320,000. The estimated monthly cost of running the network was $5,000 to $8,000/month for each of three hospitals. The authors concluded that the cost was prohibitive for routine radiology. The network was 19miles(30km) wide at its widest diameter. Their phone comapany was GTE.

Do you have any links/information on this issue? I would be interested in any information including whether backbone services for campus LANS can end up paying leasing fees to telephone companies.
