Bush-Rove also smeared McCain for his military record, and Max Cleland as well. It was so outrageous and dishonest I think it caught both of them off-guard.

Kerry should have been better prepared for it, I agree with that. And he should have struck back more fiercely and disproven all the lies right off the bat.

The problem with a smear campaign is that even if proven false it creates an aura of doubt, and turns off voters in general. It's the ultimate kind of negative ad. It turns people off to democracy itself and pollutes the whole process.

These smear campaigns are very bad for our country.
