While this seismic shift might be heading our way, it's silly to compare power to data. If the power goes out, then one can start up a generator but if you can't get access to your data, then your business can grind to a halt. Not to mention that if your data resides on someone else's computer system, you have substantially less control over who could gain access to your system. You can't know for sure if the hardware/software provider isn't keeping copies of your system, even if they are encrypted and 'relatively' secure from intrusion.

"They don't seem to have any problem buying electricity on that basis, but when it comes to computers, they freak," McNealy said this week at a product launch. "It's more of an anthropological issue than a technological or business model issue."
