I think you really are kidding yourself about conservation. CAFE standards are inched up far below the actual technical possibilities, and continue to turn a blind eye to SUVs. And transportation is the only conservation play worth considering w/r/t oil. There is scant interest in intermodal development, and in fact, AMTRAK faces huge hostility from the privatizers surrounding the Bush junta. However, there is money available for more sprawl, more ex-urban development subsidies and more total madness for our kids and grandkids to sort out after the fall.

As far as exploiting the West for extremely questionable oil & gas well projects, I will agree that Republicans have a great lust for raping the commons and letting God sort out the winners after the entire region is despoiled with marginal wells leaving permanent consequences on potable water supplies and permanent scars on fragile terrain.

We have reached the age of limits, and George Bush has turned a blind eye to reality, while making sure that the Energy Bill is absolutely rich with subsidies for corporations that are currently enjoying their greatest profits in history. Nuts.
