Brian, until ALL cars and vehicles (including legacy vehicles)are equipped with identical software there is no way that a software controlled transport system is feasible.
The human element is too unpredictable and careless, and having
only a portion of vehicles so equipped seems likely to make
the situation more dangerous. Can you imagine the cost
to manufacture and purchase a fully automated automobile/truck.
The complexity and inate technical difficulties boggles the mind....maybe
in 30+ years it will prove more feasible...but then again
will all those illegal aliens with licenses be equally equipped?
The potential problems and costs are immense. It
would require a total social and transportation infrastructure overhaul.
