[worth it or not<g>]--"Chinese offer to save 1,500 Rover jobs"
By Christopher Hope and Pamela Atherton (Filed: 10/05/2005)

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, the Chinese car maker which was close to buying MG Rover before its collapse last month, is offering to save up to 1,500 jobs at the former car manufacturer's plant in Birmingham.

The development is the most upbeat piece of news for the Midlands car maker since the cash-strapped manufacturer laid off more than 5,400 of its 6,100 workers last month. The arrangement will establish a British "engineering development" base for SAIC.

One source familiar with the talks said: "They are close to signing a deal which will give them the technology and people who do the R&D."
