They didn't pretend to have a successful product in PVD for 7 years.
Actually Varian was one of the leaders in PVD for Al and Al/Cu as well as for barrier layers prior to NVLS aquisition.
(Working in metal etch I recall many customers were using Varian's 3180/3190)

Novellus Systems, Inc. PVD System Helps Hynix 300-mm DRAM Start-Up
January 31, 2005
Novellus Systems, Inc. announced that its INOVA xT physical vapor deposition (PVD) system has been qualified by Hynix for aluminum PVD applications at the DRAM manufacturer's 300-mm fab in Icheon, Korea. Chosen for its record of productivity and cost-efficiency in high-volume DRAM manufacturing environments, Hynix took delivery of the INOVA system in the last quarter of 2004.

And even it's called PVD the film needs to be etched - so do the dielectrics deposited via CVD.
If you go back in time to NVLS CC's even R. Hill admitted that PVD aquisition did not meet expectations while he sounded fairly happy about Gasonic
