Mismatched primers are all the rage. Everyone is using them to generate false negatives and keep the numbers down. They generate false negatives in both northern and southern Vietnam for H5N1. Probably in Thailand for H5N1. Definitely in Korea for WSN/33. Probably in Angola for Marburg. Probably in many Asian countries, including China for H5N1.

The real pandemic is mismatched primers which happen when "universal primers" are used to detect a variety of isolates, and when the isolates change in the region of the primer, a false negative is generated.

The countries generating the false negatives then use the negative result to exclude patients.
