Blair to face Labour rebels

Tony Blair will today face calls for him to stand down as prime minister when he addresses the first meeting of the Parliamentary Labour party since he was returned to Downing Street with a much reduced majority.

Exasperated by his post-election reshuffle and convinced that he is an election liability, leftwing Labour MPs are planning to tell Mr Blair that he should quit before the local elections next year.

"The catastrophic decline of the Labour vote can virtually entirely be attributed to the prime minister," Bob Marshall-Andrews told Guardian Unlimited. "It is essential that he concedes his place as prime minister before our colleagues in local government face the electorate next year."...
