The problem at Altera would seem to be threefold 1) They loaded up customer inventories 2) Xilinx has new product lines which are getting design wins. 3) The third calendar quarter is slow.

In addition, there is the ever-present concern of competition from ASICs and "other stuff", of one type or another.

Most importantly, the fourth quarter is historically good for the techs. I'd expect Cisco to do well as usual...but this is already figured into the price. As for 3Com, there could be some short-term transition issues but the future looks bright...this is also already in the stock price (but the bright future isn't yet). And then there is Ascend, which already seems to have some failure priced in.

As for Xilinx and Altera, I'd expect much more of an up-cycle for Xilinx. However, at some point, increases in orders should bode well for both as inventories become depleted.
