This technique is especially useful if there is a wide spread between the bid and ask. I have had an order to buy at the bid, say 1000 shares and it gets filled incrementally at 100 or 200 shares at a time. With Etrade I only pay one commission no matter how many partial executions as long as there the same day and I haven't changed the order. This is definitely a case where patience pays. Now of course if the stock is moving and you absolutely have to have it, you have to pay he ask.
