That deal turned into additional partnerships that helped build the Japanese networking market. In 1991, Son convinced Novell to open a subsidiary in Japan. To spread the risk and help create NetWare as a standard, Son took a piece of the business and invited some of his former BusinessLand partners to invest, too. They did, and the payoff came quickly. Novell's Japanese sales climbed to $130 million last year. "Son was the broker -- he made it all happen," says Novell Vice President Darl McBride.
