Those Filibuster Polls

by Mark Noonan
Blogs for Bush

David Hill, writing in The Hill, gives us the story on the MSM filibuster polls, and why they should be taken with a grain of salt:

<<<

The only point that Newport makes convincingly is that Americans consistently oppose changing the filibuster as described by pollsters. The problem with his analysis is that the pollsters’ descriptions are hopelessly inadequate and often biased in favor of the filibuster. By inadequate, I mean that polls try to explain “filibusters” in 50 words or fewer to people who are generally uninformed and disinterested.

>>>

This is why we see large majorities in favor of retaining the filibuster and giving each nominee and up or down vote; depends on how you word the question, and what questions you ask. As for me, I believe that the American people are fair and an elementary notion of fairness is that each person proposed for an office deserves a full hearing and an up or down vote. If the GOP were to try and approve a dozen judicial nominees by attaching their nominations to a spending bill, this would be viewed as unfair...and the American people also view as unfair the concept of a tiny minority preventing a vote on nominees.

What the Democrats are trying to do is set the precedent (said precedent to last right up to the moment the Democrats regain a Senate majority, if that ever happens) that the minority Party determines who gets a vote; this is outrageous, absurd and is not supported by the American people. I've a message for wavering GOP Senators: do it; invoke the "Constitutional Option". The American people will sustain you on it; everyone deserves a fair shake, even President Bush's judicial nominees.
