Scotsman,

Andy is just bitter. Of course DVD is important to CUBE. They make decoder chips that are used in many PC DVD cards and could also be used in television DVD players. So far only two companies have selected CUBE for the TV DVD players, and neither is available in the US. This will hopefully change as OEMs go to cheaper price points. Right now they are selling to the early adopters, who I think actually prefer high priced units (more snob appeal). As the price points go more toward the mass market, CUBE should get more design wins, since they have a single chip which replaces a handful of chips in the current design. Also this chip shares most of its design with CUBE's STB MPEG-2 decoder, so the NRE can be spread around. CUBE rules in the encoder world. I'm not sure exactly what their market share is but would be willing to bet its greater than 80 %. While encoders are not a mass market (you only need to encode a DVD once) they are very expensive and high margin. All the DVD encoding shops that are gearing up should be buying CUBE chips, so this should help revenue and profits over the next few quarters. This is why we are so interested in DVD. Ignore Andy, or just laugh at him.

Rick
